JHU ALLIANCE

The Johns Hopkins Alliance for Science & Technology Development ("Alliance") is a 36-member committee charged with evaluating the commercial viability of selected research projects at the Johns Hopkins University. Members of the Alliance evaluates marketing opportunities and provides assistance with the identification of financing to enable the commercialization of worthy discoveries.

The Alliance consists of pharmaceutical and biotech executives, medical device designers and manufacturers, representatives from the diagnostics world and venture capitalists, as well as angel investors.

The Alliance's charter is to evaluate research projects within the University, determine the commercial strength of each project, and assign an Alliance member to champion its development and marketability. The group will also become the university's conduit toward creating awareness among industry leaders and business entrepreneurs.

This alliance among business leaders and university researchers has been made possible under the provisions of the Bayh-Dole Act, which encourages the utilization of inventions produced under federal funding and promotes the participation of universities and small businesses in the development and commercialization process. It also permits exclusive licensing with transfer of an invention to the marketplace.
