JHTT FacultySUBMIT A DISCLOSURE (ONLINE)
You may submit a disclosure electronically by accessing the JHTT Data System here.

SUBMIT A DISCLOSURE (PAPER)
You may submit a disclosure by downloading and filing the following forms with the JHTT office, as described below.

Report an Invention
To report new intellectual property, a Report of Invention (ROI) must be completed, which includes assignment of ownership interest to the University. An ROI provides the necessary information about the intellectual property so JHTT staff can properly evaluate invention disclosures and pursue licensing opportunities. An invention may be any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, composition of matter, or related improvement. The process of invention begins with conception of the invention, and ends in reduction to practice (showing the invention obtains desired results). In order for an invention to be patentable it must have utility (be useful), it must be novel (new and original), and it must be non-obvious to one of ordinary skill in the field.

Completion of all sections of the ROI enables JHTT to efficiently process and review the invention disclosure. Additionally, faculty participation at this step is often the key to successful licensing of the invention. Because the inventors are the most knowledgeable of their field, they frequently provide JHTT with the most promising commercial leads in regard to licensing.

To submit an ROI:
The Report of Invention forms are available in a two formats: a) patented inventions and b) un-patented research materials. In some patented invention cases there are biological materials associated. In this instance, completion of a supplemental Biological Materials Form is also needed to designate and include the specific names and descriptions of any tangible materials associated with the invention. Tangible property inventions, such as research tools for which patent protection is not appropriate, should be reported using the Tangible Property Disclosure and Assignment Form. Please select the form that best fits the nature of your disclosure (discussed above) and compatibility with your software from the choices below:

Patented Inventions
Report of Invention (Adobe PDF version)
Report of Invention (Microsoft Word version)

Software Supplemental Form (Adobe PDF version)
Software Supplemental Form (Microsoft Word version)

Un-patented Research Materials

Tangible Property Report of Invention (Microsoft Word version)

Once you have completed your report of invention, it is necessary for you to obtain signatures from each of the inventors named on the report of invention and the signature from the Department Director of each department in which the invention was made. The JHTT cannot process the Report of Invention without the required signatures.

Mail your report of invention to:

Once we have received your completed ROI, a Licensing Associate will begin to work on intellectual property issues after which the Technology Development Associate will begin to assess commercialization issues. Together the JHTT Associates will explore opportunities for licensing.

The Licensing Associate will contact you to arrange a meeting or conference call to further discuss the details of your invention. From the time we receive the ROI, it can take several weeks before we contact you and approximately 6 weeks to fully evaluate an invention disclosure.

To contact the Technology Development Assistant for initiation or status of an ROI, contact us at JHTT-Communications@jhu.edu.
