| | WHOM WE SERVE AND WHY
The JHTT acts as the ambassador of new technologies at Johns Hopkins, serving the researchers who invent them as well as outside interests that seek to fulfill their intellectual and commercial potential. The office exists to facilitate collaborations among researchers, companies, entrepreneurs, and economic development organizations that are interested in developing University innovations while returning a portion of the revenue to our laboratories. The work of the JHTT benefits the following groups: - Johns Hopkins inventors: The JHTT works closely with JHU researchers to identify patentable and copyrightable inventions and tangible research properties that may ultimately become commercial products and services. The JHTT helps our inventors protect their intellectual assets and negotiate appropriate compensation for the acquisition or use of these assets. The JHTT supports the faculty in the following schools:
- Bloomberg School of Public Health
- Carey Business School
- Krieger School of Arts and Sciences
- Nitze School of Advanced International Studies
- Peabody Institute
- School of Medicine
- School of Nursing
- School of Professional Studies and Business and Education
- Whiting School of Engineering
- Johns Hopkins: In addition to direct financial terms, the JHTT promotes the academic mission of the University and extends the reputation of the University by supporting researchers and finding viable applications for new discoveries.
- Private industry: The JHTT acts as a point of contact for industry and entrepreneurs wishing to access the University’s intellectual and tangible property. The JHTT actively seeks and nurtures contacts with national and international companies that are capable of developing and commercializing our innovations.
- Research sponsors: The JHTT supports the activities of researchers involved in projects funded by the U.S. government and other sponsors to maximize the potential success of these programs and to provide communication on the operation, progress, and accounting of these endeavors.
- The academic community: The JHTT facilitates the collaborative spirit of the academic community by providing peer institutions with University intellectual property through such processes as material transfers and bundling programs.
- Society as a whole: The JHTT is the resource that links researchers with the assets they need to invent processes and products and develop these innovations for the public good. Technology can only benefit mankind if it is given the opportunity to be fully developed, and that often requires a measured influx of ideas and resources.
